Hitachi Demonstrates Industry's First 12Gb/s SAS SSD
Hitachi announced the storage industry's first technology demonstration of a 12 gigabit per second (12Gb/s) SAS solid state drive (SSD), representing the next performance step in the evolution of SAS, the preferred interface technology for enterprise servers and storage solutions. HGST is participating in the 12Gb/s SAS demonstration at the SCSI Trade Association Technology Showcase on May 9, 2012, at the Hyatt Hotel in Santa Clara, Calif.

Hitachi Echelon Oval MRI scanner expands examination space by 40%
The Echelon Oval, developed by Hitachi Medical, is a 1.5 Tesla ultra wide bore MRI, with an oval shaped opening much wider than in conventional models.
Q: "The opening here is 74cm, which is extremely wide for an MRI device. But, we were still able to maintain a compact design, so the device is suited for use in a broad range of facilities from large hospitals to private practice clinics. "

Hitachi Develops High-efficiency Motor Without Using Neodymium
Hitachi and Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems co-developed a permanent magnet synchronous motor with an efficiency of 93% without using a neodymium (Nd-Fe-B) magnet, which contains a rare-earth material.
The efficiency of the motor is equivalent to "IE4," which is the highest rank in the motor energy efficiency guidelines of the "IEC60034-31" international standard. The motor has an output power of 11kW and is targeted at industrial motors such as of large fans for sending air and fluid pumps.

New LCD joint venture of Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi launched
A new liquid crystal display maker jointly set up by Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. with a government-backed fund has started operations, with the major electronics makers hoping to enhance their competitive edge in the LCD market for smartphones and tablet computers, the company said Monday.

Prince Hitachi to visit Tonga for king's funeral
Prince Hitachi and his wife Princess Hanako will visit the South Pacific nation of Tonga from March 25 to 31 to attend a funeral for Tonga's King George Tupou V, who died last Sunday, the Cabinet approved Friday.
The prince, Emperor Akihito's younger brother, and the princess will arrive in Tonga via New Zealand. Crown Prince Naruhito, the emperor's eldest son, attended the king's coronation in 2008.

Hitachi Surveillance Camera System Searches Through 36 Million Faces In One Second
This surveillance camera system can search through data on 36 million faces in one second. Developed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric, the system can automatically detect a face from either surveillance footage or a regular photo, and search for it.
The search results are displayed immediately, showing thumbnail images of potential candidates. When a thumbnail is selected, the associated recorded surveillance footage can be viewed, so users can quickly review the persons actions before and after the image was taken.

New Hitachi device measures radiation from a distance
Hitachi Consumer Electronics Co. has developed a portable device for workers to measure radioactivity over a wide range from a safer distance of more than 10 meters, the company said.
The gauge allows a user to remain far from sources of radiation, because the machine can measure targets up to 30 to 40 meters away, the company said.
Hitachi made the instrument relatively small and light so it can be carried in the field. It is about the size of a small cooler and weighs 16.8 kilograms.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) announced that it has shipped more than 25 million Travelstar™ Z-series, 7 millimeter (mm) z-height, 2.5-inch hard disk drives (HDD), enabling a new era of thin and light portable computers, ultra-compact CE devices and industrial systems. The company also announced that it is now shipping its new 500GB, Travelstar Z7K500 drive – the industry's fastest and highest capacity, one-disk, 7,200 RPM HDD. All Hitachi GST Z-series drives can serve as a direct replacement for standard, 2.5-inch 9.5mm hard drives.

Hitachi Humanoid Robot Guides User to Location of Requested Object
Hitachi Ltd announced that it has added "object recognition" and "object search" functions to its "EMIEW2" humanoid robot.
The object recognition function uses a database based on Web information to look for images similar to an object shown by the user with a high-speed similar image search function. Also, it analyzes texts accompanying the images to deduce the name of the object and link the object's name and image.
