Veteran lefty Shimoyanagi joins Rakuten

Veteran lefty Shimoyanagi joins Rakuten The Rakuten Eagles said Sunday they have acquired veteran pitcher Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi.

Shimoyanagi and Senichi Hoshino were reunited for the first time since the left-hander won 10 games for the Hanshin Tigers in 2003, when they won the Central League title under the flamboyant manager.

''I want to meet the team's expectations of joining the starting rotation,'' the 43-year-old told a press conference at Rakuten's spring training site in Okinawa Prefecture.

''I'm sure the manager will help me get my career back on track, and of course, I'll make my own efforts, too.''

Shimoyanagi owns a 129-104 career record with a 3.91 ERA and will enter his 22nd season in 2012.

In October, he was released by Hanshin after going 0-2 with a 3.54 ERA in just six appearances last season.
