Japanese operatic bass Chikara Kishimoto received the Pushkin Medal from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday for introducing Russian songs to the public over 40 years. Kishimoto, 64, who sings folk songs in the Russian language at orchestral concerts, is the first Japanese singer to receive the award that honors contributors to the promotion of Russian culture.
At the award ceremony at the official presidential residence in the suburbs of Moscow, Kishimoto said, ''Russian songs convey the joy of living and I will continue to study and sing each of them.'' Medvedev said thank you in Japanese and shook hands with Kishimoto. Ikuo Kameyama, president of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and Kazuo Kobayashi, a former reporter for Japanese public broadcaster NHK, are among other Japanese recipients of the medal.
