Under pressure from Osaka's reformist Mayor Toru Hashimoto, the Municipal Transportation Bureau here is planning to reduce the annual pay of city bus drivers by some 40 percent beginning from fiscal 2012, it has been learned.
According to Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau officials, if the plan is approved, the annual pay of bus drivers hired as civil workers by the municipal government will be reduced to an average of 4.41 to 4.47 million yen, matching Osaka's private bus companies' minimum annual wage. Osaka's approximately 700 city bus drivers are currently paid an average yearly wage of approximately 7.39 million yen.
