The ministry and the Japan Pension Service looked into cases of senior citizens who had not made use of a medical insurance system for more than one year.
The move came after it was learned in 2010 that pension benefits were still being withdrawn for many elderly who, in fact, were missing.
The survey found that pensions had been paid unnecessarily to about 1,000 people. About 90 percent of them were unaccounted for while remainder were dead. The ministry stopped the pension payments immediately.

Relatives of missing Japanese pensioners will soon be required to report the cases to authorities to put a stop to illegal pension payouts.
