The Japan Coast Guard has arrested the captain of a South Korean fishing boat for trying to evade an inspection after entering Japan's exclusive economic zone.
A Coast Guard patrol boat observed the squid-fishing vessel in waters off Tsushima Island, near northern Kyushu, on Saturday afternoon, and ordered it to stop for inspections. The area is close to the border line of Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The fishing boat tried to break away, but the Japanese patrol boat followed it for about 10 minutes, and eventually forced it to stop inside South Korea's exclusive economic zone.
Coast Guard officials say that apart from the captain, the ship had 5 South Korean and Vietnamese crew members.
The officials plan to take the fishing boat to a Coast Guard base for detailed inspections on Sunday. They also plan to question the captain about why he tried to get away, and whether he was engaged in illegal fishing.
