Average Weight Of Japanese Girls Declines

Average weight of Japanese girls declines The average weight of girls in Japan declined in all age groups from 5 to 17 in the 2011 school year from the previous year for the first time since the government began conducting surveys in the 1948 school year, the education ministry said Thursday.

The average weight of boys also fell in most of the age groups from a year earlier, suggesting that children are increasingly dieting to lose weight, according to a preliminary report on the trend in children's physical condition released by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
The ministry believes that the average weight of children in Japan apparently peaked between the school years of 1998 and 2003, after continuing to grow since the end of World War II. The average figures have been on a downward trend in recent years.
